There was a decent contingent of Cascade members on the September 17/18 weekend for Ponies in the Sun at Yakima. The Bingamans, Purviances, Scott Ferguson and Heather, Dave Emmett and Jim Compton brought their Cougars and were joined later by Mike (no car) Warner and Lee (no car) Windh on Saturday for the usual dinner get-together. Mother Nature was cruel Sunday morning, dropping just enough rain on the newly preened cats to be annoying, but by the time we hit the show field, the sun peeked through and the temperature rose significantly. Before long Pat Price and Neal Jacobson joined us, rounding out the group. I don’t know the exact number of registrants, but it seemed to be down this year, perhaps due to the unsettled weather, and as we performed our voting duties, I noticed several Mustang classes unfilled which is always disappointing to show organizers. Voting complete, pulled pork sandwiches in hand, the entertainment portion of the program began with Pat doing hilarious Lawrence Welk imitations to his captive audience under our tent. (Pat, you were wunnerful ah-wunnerful.) Carol & Sam Bingaman, Mike and I took in the poker walk but fell short of winning hands. However when it came time for the “real” awards, nearly all the Cascade members cashed in. Pat’s 69 convertible took 3rd in the Cougar class while Jim took 2nd for his registered “red 69 convertible”, even though he drove his white XR7 (Jim spends too much time at Hanford, I think) and Charlene finished 1st (even though the announcer called her Marlene Purvans). Dave placed 2nd and Jeff 1st in the Modified Cougar class, while Scott came away with the Best of Show Cougar trophy. Not a bad haul everyone – congratulations!
