CASCADE COUGAR CLUB

Ponies in the Sun

Yakima, Washington

September 18-19 ,2010

Event Report by Chris Farmer

The 2010 installation was another great show.  The morning started with some sketchy looking weather and even some drizzle. But for the bulk of the show it was sunny and a little cool. This year the majority of our club members chose to go over on Saturday.  Historically this has been the case, but the last few years had seen a paradigm shift, so I am glad to see that we are getting back to making this an overnighter. I am looking forward to being able to make this one an overnight trip next year.

This year saw an increase in the number of Cougars that participated again.  We have now seen back to back years with upticks at this show.  I am hoping to see this trend continue as it is a very nice show.  There were a total of 9 cougars present, 8 of which were CCC members and the owner of the 9th car joined the club while at the show.  Dan Urton joined the club with his 1969 XR-7 428 CJ car, welcome Dan!!!  It was the 5th Cougar produced in 1969.  Members present were as follows: Larry and Charleen Purviance, Jim Compton, Scott Ferguson & Heather Whitaker, Jeff & Carol Bingaman, Dave Emmett, Steve and Sharon Citrone, Chris Farmer, Mike Warner and Dan Urton.  This was also the first show for Mike Warner’s car and it was well received and well done.  Make sure to watch for it at future events.

The awards went as follows; Cougar Hardtop and Convertible class, 1st place Scott Ferguson & Heather Whitaker ( 68 XR7-G), 2nd place Mike Warner (67 Std) and 3rd place Steve and Sharon Citrone (67 XR-7 GT).  The Cougar Modified class saw Larry and Charleen Purviance in 1st (67 XR-7), Chris Farmer in 2nd (68 std) and Jim Compton in 3rd (69 convertible).  Jeff Bingaman’s 70 standard was awarded Best of Show Cougar, congratulations it’s a gorgeous car.  As the club was seated during the awards ceremony it was discovered that the couple seated in front of Larry and Charleen were also named Larry and Charlene.  Not going to imagine what the odds on that are !

At the end of our day the club caravaned back to Ellensburg via the Canyon road.  I normally really enjoy this as it is a gorgeous drive.  However this year it was a white knuckle ride.  Right as we left Yakima a nasty thunder cell moved through and the canyon rode turned into a makeshift slalom course of tumble weeds and bowling ball size rocks.  As we arrived in Ellensburg the caravan stopped so several of us could refuel.  It was noted that Scott and Heather were not even in sight.  After a few minutes they pulled into the station and we found out why.  The rest of the caravan narrowly missed a landslide.  Thank goodness all the cars and people made it to the dinner destination without harm.  We had a great dinner and then went our separate ways for the most part.  The majority of us stuck together loosely until the Hwy 18 cutoff.

I highly encourage all of you to put this one on the calendar for next year.  The weather is always nice in Yakima at this time of year and if you can make it for the show you will not be disappointed.  Here’s hoping to see you in 2011.
